Chicken Larb, Laotian food |
Larb is a type of spicy meat salad that is very popular in Laos and northeastern Thailand. It's one of my favorite Thai dishes, especially when it's served with a side of sticky rice. You just have to try out this menu no matter where you travel to :).
We didn't stay long in Vientiane, as we wanted to head north to see other parts of the country. Now we are in the small town of Vang Vieng, Laos. It's a very popular tourist town, and there aren't that many traditional Lao food restaurants, but Vela Cafe looked good. Of course I had to order a plate of larb. The menu had many kinds of meat to order, but today I was in the mood for chicken larb (traditionally it's cooked with pork).
Lucky for me, they served a big portion! The best larb should be savory, spicy, and a little bit sour, and this one was! Tossed roasted rice gives the larb its unique kick, and as the salad is mixed with fresh mint leaves, it has an amazing fresh aroma and taste. When you eat this dish with sticky rice, just roll the rice into a ball and dip it into the sauces on the plate. This is a good meal and I am very happy for my belly :D
I'm having this delicious meal at Vela Cafe & Restaurant in Vang Vieng. They are located on the main street, and are very easy to get to. The restaurant is comfy and relaxing, with lots of places to sit and relax. They also offer breakfast and coffee, and a wide varieties of Laotian and western food. I have added some pictures of the restaurant and a page of the menu with their Laotian dishes below. Check it out and let me know what other Laotian food we should try while we are in the country!
Price 💲(20-40,000 kip; surprisingly, food in Laos is more expensive than in Thailand or Vietnam)
