World-Famous Lord Stow's Portuguese Egg Tart, Macau
Portuguese Egg Tart, Macau |
Traveling is more fun when you can also be a food adventurer. Trying the favorite local dishes helps me to experience the culture. But it's even better when I'm visiting a place that has a blend of many cultures, like Macau. Macau, now a region of China, was a colony of Portugal until 1999! During several centuries, Portuguese culture made a great impact on Macau. You can still see it in the architecture, religion, and food.
I have been so impressed and amazed by Macau. When people hear about Macau, they probably think of casinos. But I discovered that Macau is so much more than just a gambling city. This is a city that is rich in culture and history. It's clean, the people are very nice and friendly, and everywhere you look there's something new to learn and see. I mostly walked everywhere on foot because I enjoyed seeing the architecture and lifestyle so much.
One day, we visited the southern part of Macau, called Colane. While there, we could not pass by this famous bakery shop. Lord Stow's serves a world-famous Portuguese egg tart that has been a Macau favorite since 1989. The bakery was opened by Andrew Stow, an Englishman who lived in Macau. His concept is to serve traditional Portuguese egg tarts freshly baked without any preservatives or additives in their pastries. His own recipe has now become an icon in Macau.
Lord Stow's Bakery in Coloane is not hard to find. There are two separate areas of the bakery, one where you can eat in, and the other where you can buy an egg tart to go. I got mine to go and took it to the nearby benches where I could sit and look out across the ocean.
The tart was warm, as it had just come out of the oven. The crust was light and flaky, and the buttery egg custard was soft and creamy. It's less sweet than you might think, which makes the tart taste just perfect. I could eat these every day!
Price : 10 MOP (Macanese Pataca)
