Roti Gaeng Gai in Phuket, Thailand
by Roti Chaofah
We had flown down to Phuket from Bangkok for the day. A friend of ours, who is originally from Thailand's biggest and most popular island, wanted to visit his hometown in order to take part in a Buddhist ritual at Wat Chalong, a famous temple. It was a very early flight, and we arrived in Phuket just in time for breakfast. Our friend treated us to a meal at his favorite local restaurant, Roti Chaofa, which serves the most famous southern-Thai roti and chicken curry in Phuket.

We sat down at a small metal table in this famous Halal restaurant, and our friend ordered for us. In just a few minutes, a waiter arrived with a tray loaded up with our delicious breakfast!
We each got a plate of roti, a type of flaky flatbread cut into strips and topped with a runny fried egg. We also got a bowl of thick curry and a juicy piece of curry chicken. To properly eat this special dish, you take small bite of roti with a bit of gaeng gai curry and chicken. Each bite should have a little bit of everything! All of the textures and flavors compliment each other perfectly.
The roti was hot, flaky, crispy, and soft all at the same time. The gaeng gai curry was rich and thick, perfectly sweet (not at all spicy). It was similar to massaman curry, but a little richer and sweeter.

To drink, we had a classic cha yen, the famous Thai tea sweetened with condensed milk and poured over ice. It was a wonderful way to start the morning!
Roti Chaofa is super famous in Phuket, and has a reputation as serving some of the best roti in the province. Despite its reputation, it's not expensive. The food is inexpensive, but of very high quality.
