Classic Texas Barbecue
by Hammond's BBQ, Glen Rose, Texas
Hammond's BBQ has been smoking delicious traditional Texas-style barbecue in Glen Rose, Texas since 1966. Upon the recommendation of a friend, we stopped by Hammond's on a recent road trip through Texas. Even from the very first step out of the car in the parking lot, we could smell the amazing aroma of smoked meat.
A sign inside the restaurant said to sit wherever we liked, so we picked a seat in the corner of the old-style barbecue joint, and had a look at the menu. Shortly, a friendly-faced waitress came over to take our orders.
Here's a tip: if you want to try a little bit of everything (like we did), order the "child plate", which comes with two meats and two sides. It would take a very, very large child to eat all of the food that arrived at our table!
First, we started with smoked sausage and a pork rib. The sausage was juicy with a rich savory, smoky flavor. When you take a bite of the sausage, the skin pops, releasing tender, juicy flavors, seasoned and smoked, which linger in your mouth. It's hard to put the fork down, because the sausage is just so good! The meal came with barbecue sauce on the side, but the meat was so good that you almost didn't even need it!
Moving onto the rib! It's impossible not to fall in love at the first bite. The smoky meat is so tender, and it very nearly completely melts away in your mouth. It just pulls away from the bone! Finally, the turkey was lean and smoky, and went especially well with the side of pickles and fresh onion, and the slices were so thick and filling that we almost weren't able to finish all of the meat that we had ordered.
Each plate came with two sides. We decided on potato salad, fried okra, onion rings, and green beans, all of which were fantastic. The okra was especially wonderful, and even though the portion was huge, we ate it all. Each plate also came with a piece of Texas toast - a double-thick, extra buttery slice of toasted white bread traditionally served with Texas barbecue.
Even though we were full, we couldn't pass up the chance for dessert. The dessert specials at Hammond's change from time to time, so be sure to ask the server what's available. We decided on a thick slice of sweet and tart key lime cheesecake pie. Like everything else, the portion was huge, and it was perfect to share between the two of us. served with a big dollop of sweet cream, it was the perfect, rich way to end an already decadent meal.
Hammond's is a cool little place with a fantastic history of serving great barbecue in the Glen Rose area. The restaurant itself is decorated in an eclectic mix of old metal signs and vintage license plates, which cover the walls. Traveler's Tips
Glen Rose is such an amazing area in Texas to visit, particularly if you are into the outdoors! It's one of my favorite parts of the state. Here are a few of my favorite local spots:
- Dinosaur Valley State Park - amazing camping, but best known for the fossilized dinosaur tracks in the bed of the Paluxy River
- Somervell County Museum - great little museum all about local history
- Fossil Rim Wildlife Center - an open zoo and wildlife center where you can get up close and personal to exotic animals in a safe and ethical way
- Big Rocks Park - outdoor park where locals hang out and stay cool along the banks of the river
Location and Hours
- Open Wednesday-Thursday 11am-3pm; closed Sunday and Monday
