Thai Coconut Ice Cream
in Bangkok, Thailand
It's almost always hot in Thailand. Luckily, there's a very nice (not to mention super cheap) Thai treat that helps to cool you off when it's hot outside: coconut ice cream!

This very Thai dessert is made from coconut milk instead of cow's milk, and tastes lighter than regular ice cream. It's icy and fresh, and is just about perfect when it's so hot outside. The best part is, coconut ice cream can be found all over Bangkok, and it usually costs less than a dollar (20 THB, or about $0.60).

You can also get lots of great toppings! In the picture from top to bottom, left to right:
- fruit jelly, - orange jelly, - pineapple pieces- coconut jelly , - red beans, - a Thai dessert called tap tim krob (water chestnuts in tapioca)
- taro root, - another type of (purple) taro, - papaya
traditional toppings for Thai coconut ice cream |
You can add whatever toppings you like. Personally, I recommend pineapple and coconut jelly. Sometimes the coconut ice cream is also topped with sweet corn or sweetened condensed milk, an especially traditional way to enjoy your coconut ice cream.
Price
💲 - very cheap! Thai coconut ice cream generally costs around 20 THB per scoop (approximately $0.60). Extra toppings may cost extra.
Dietary Notes
🥛 - as Thai coconut ice cream is made from coconut milk, this sweet dessert is suitable for those with lactose sensitivity.
Where to find it
Coconut ice cream can be found all over the city (really, all over the country), from food markets to mobile vendor carts. It's especially easy to find in the summer, when it is a much-appreciated cool treat.
