Curry Queso (Indian-Mexican Fusion)
by North Street Curry, San Marcos, Texas
Indian-Mexican fusion isn't an obvious choice, but why not? The first time I tasted this incredible combination of flavors, it made perfect sense! Last summer, while road tripping through the Lone Star State (Texas), I stayed for a few days in my favorite Texas Hill Country town, San Marcos, to enjoy the town's beautiful nature, outdoor activities, and delicious food. Lunch one day brought me to North Street Curry Shop, an Indian-Mexican fusion restaurant that makes the best queso I've ever had (and that's saying something, coming from a lifelong Texan)! The Indian dishes with a Texas twist that North Street offers are both creative and delicious. Though it's an unconventional fusion cuisine combination, it makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Both Indian and Mexican cuisines are famous for their rich flavors, heavy use of spices, and aromatic ingredients.
Texas-stye queso (Mexican cheese dip) is made with North Street's secret house blend of curry spices. It's spiced, but not spicy, and brings out the best flavors of all of its ingredients.
I think that chips and queso like this pair perfectly with beer, and North Street doesn't disappoint in that regard either. With dozens of beers on tap (and frequently rotating), it's always a good idea to enjoy a pint with your meal.

Menu and Price
An order of North Street's famous curry queso with tortilla chips costs $8. It's a little more expensive than I would normally pay for an order of queso, but it's so good that I felt totally justified on the price. Other dishes are also reasonable, running in the $8-$12 range. The rotating draught beer is $3.

Traveler's tips
Visit San Marcos in the summer months, when you can rent an innertube and float down the local San Marcos river. Tubing is popular throughout the Hill Country, but in my opinion, the best tubing is found in San Marcos. While glass bottles are prohibited, tubers are welcome to bring coolers and cans of beer with them on the river. It's a fun, relaxing way to spend an afternoon on a hot Texas day.
