Funnel Fries
At the Cameron Park Zoo Concession Stand, Waco, TX
When we were visiting the wonderful Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Texas, we decided to stop in at the concession stand for a snack. Not knowing exactly what we should expect, we ordered the "Funnel Fries". To be honest, I was expecting some form of French fries, but when I opened the box, I was just as happy to see a fry form of funnel cake topped with powdered sugar.

I really wasn't expecting something sweet, but sometimes when you take a chance and order an unknown snack or dish, you might be pleasantly surprised! In fact, on an afternoon when I was starting to feel tired and sleepy, the sugar rush from these delicious, fresh-made funnel fries perked me right up!
The funnel fries were obviously fresh out of the frier. They were still hot, crispy, and oily. Each one was crunchy on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside. Like a traditional funnel cake, the batter itself wasn't overly sweet, but the fries were topped with a generous portion of powdered sugar, which melted into a sweet, sticky syrup over the fries. It's best to eat them with a fork, because they can get a little bit sticky!
