Pink Noodle Soup: Yentafo Convent, Bangkok, Thailand

Pinky Noodle Soup

by Yentafo Convent, Bangkok, Thailand

While exploring Soi Convent, a busy and vibrant city in Bangkok's Silom neighborhood named for the Assumption Convent School, we stopped in at a local noodle shop for lunch. Without knowing it, we had chosen a Michelin Star restaurant, and when we saw the menu, we were excited to order their famous yentafo noodle soup.

Yentafo is a popular noodle dish in Thailand that is famous for its distinctive pink broth. The unique color comes from a certain type of fermented soybean paste that is used as a base for the soup. The dish can be served with a variety of different noodles (usually in a Thai noodle shop you can choose flat noodles, rice noodles, egg noodles, vermicelli, etc.), but I chose egg noodles (my favorite).

The noodles were topped with different types of tofu, fish balls, pickled cabbage, and crispy wontons. This gives the dish a variety of delicious tastes and textures.

The pink broth, of course, is the star of the show. It's got a slightly sweet, slightly sour flavor which is difficult to describe if you've never tried it. It doesn't taste fermented at all! I guess you'll just have to order a bowl yourself to see what you think!
