Nasi Lemak McD

The World of Fast Food: McDonald's Malaysia

Whenever I'm traveling to a new country, I usually try to have at least one fast food meal. This might seem a little weird, especially when visiting a country as renowned for its cuisine as Malaysia. However, it is absolutely delightful to discover the interesting fast food twists on local cuisine that chains such as McDonald's, KFC, and Burger King come up with around the world.

I was at KL Sentral, the main train station in Malaysia's bustling capital, and saw an advertisement for "Nasi Lemak McD" by McDonald's, a take on Malaysia's national dish! Of course, I had to try it.

Nasi lemak is a traditional Malaysian dish that is considered the national dish of Malaysia. It is a fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaves, giving it a distinctive aroma and flavor. The name "nasi lemak" translates to "fatty rice" in Malay, referring to the rich and creamy texture of the cooked rice. Traditionally the rice is served in a folded banana leaf and topped with salty and crispy fried anchovies, crunchy peanuts, a fried egg, and a spicy chili paste called "sambal".

Nasi lemak is typically eaten for breakfast but can be enjoyed at any time of the day. It is a beloved and popular dish in Malaysia and can be found in various street food stalls, local eateries, and even upscale restaurants.

The McDonald's version does not have peanuts or anchovies, but instead is topped with two pieces of their famous crispy bone-in deep fried chicken, an egg, sambal sauce, and some cucumbers to give a cooling crunch.

The sambal sauce was pleasantly spicy. I was worried that they might tone it down a bit, but I was very happy with the taste. Although it's not as good as traditional nasi lemak (although that is to be expected), it's definitely worth trying when out and about in Malaysia.
