Gluay Ping (กล้วยปิ้ง), or Grilled Thai Bananas
street food snack in Siracha, Thailand
Gluay ping, or grilled bananas, are a sweet, tasty, and cheap street food snack found throughout Thailand. It's a healthy snack (providing you don't enjoy too much of the sweet palm sugar dipping syrup that is often served alongside the bananas).
We enjoyed these gluay ping at Central Si Racha shopping mall after returning to the mainland from a short trip to Koh Sichang Island.
Gluay Ping, or Grilled Thai Bananas |
There are many different types of bananas in Thailand, but this dish uses a certain type of very small and very sweet bananas called "gluay nam wah". To make gluay ping, the bananas (which need to be firm and ripe and not yet mushy in order to properly grill) are cut into small segments, placed on a bamboo skewer, and grilled over hot charcoal or on a griddle. After grilling, the vendor takes a sort of flat iron press to smash the bananas into round, flat medallions.

The bananas are served with a sweet dipping sauce, usually caramel or a sweet palm sugar syrup. The sauce is optional but adds an extra layer of rich sweetness to the snack.

This is a super cheap snack. A skewer of four grilled bananas costs just 20 baht. We ordered three skewers to share.
