Dim Sum Tuang
by Chef Yip, Bangkok, Thailand
I don't often have dim sum. It's a Hong Kong (or Cantonese, more generally) specialty, and not necessarily a popular street food dish in Thailand. However, lately dim sum has been becoming more and more popular throughout the kingdom.
A while back, my wife and I took a staycation along the riverside in Bangkok. For lunch, we decided to check out Dim Sum Tuang by Chef Yip, a super famous restaurant along Charoenkrung Road.

Chef Yip serves up some of Bangkok's best and most affordable dim sum. Born in Hong Kong, and with many years of experience in the service industry working at the five-star Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok, Chef Yip makes some of the most authentic traditional Cantonese food in the city.
The menu, which is printed in Thai, Chinese, and English, is easy to read and to order from, and makes for a friendly and welcoming dining experience for people no matter what language they can speak.
The taste of the dim sum is unforgettable; it's some of the best dim sum I've ever had in my life (and I've been to Hong Kong several times!). The shop is very authentic and traditional, taking up the space of an old-fashioned Thai-Chinese shophouse along the oldest street in the city.

What was especially impressive was the price. Although the ingredients are of the highest quality and the dim sum is so good that it rivals that of the city's beat five-star hotels, the prices on the menu are affordable and reasonable for the regular person.
We ordered several dishes to take back to our hotel, since Chef Yip's restaurant was already busy and the seats were full when we arrived. The restaurant was full of customers from Thailand as well as tourists from China, the US, and Europe. It's a really popular place!
We started with har gao, paper-thin dumplings stuffed with full shrimp. The dumplings were very delicate, and the rice flour wrapping nearly melted in the mouth. The shrimp themselves were peppery and savory and were really delicious.
We had the har gao with a side of roasted chili and garlic oil, which was so good! The dipping sauce added a great savory and spicy complexity to the dumplings.
