Kaeng Som, or Southern Thai Sour Curry with Fish Eggs in Hat Yai, Thailand

Kaeng Som, or Southern Sour Curry with Fish Eggs

by Khunjit Sea View Koh Yo Restaurant, Hat Yai, Thailand

Kaeng Som, or sour orange curry, is one of the most famous southern Thai dishes. One afternoon in Hat Yai, the largest city in southern Thailand, we stopped in at a quiet seaside restaurant for a bowl of kaeng som with giant fish eggs. Unlike other types of Thai curry, kaeng som is not made with coconut milk, and has a more soup-like consistancy.

This spicy and sour curry soup dish gets its distinct flavor from tamarind and is sweetened a bit with palm sugar to cut some of the sourness. They curry paste itself which forms the base of the soup is made from red chilies, shrimp paste, and shallots.

I'm not sure of what kind of fish eggs were in the curry, but they were huge! Fish eggs have an interesting chewy consistency. While our kaeng som was made with fish eggs and slices of raw young coconut meat, other types of kaeng som in the south will contain shrimp, fish, or other seafood.

Kaeng som is usually served with a huge portion of steamed white rice which is meant to be eaten together with the soup.

The dish was really spicy, even for me! A lot of Thai people say that the food in the south can be way spicier than other regions!
