Naem, or Sour Sausage and Cabbage Stir Fry

Naem is a Thai food that you might not be familiar with. Unlike pad Thai, fried rice, or basil stir fry, it's not one of the traditional Thai dishes that really got exported abroad.
The other day I stopped in for some naem at one of Bangkok's most popular food courts.

Naem is a type of fermented pork sausage mostly eaten in the north and northeast of Thailand. It's got a very distinct and strong sour flavor, but one that grows on you over time. Naem is typically eaten raw, but it is safe to eat because of the fermentation process.
I have to admit, the flavor of the sour sausage is a little strong for me. I enjoy it, but it's not my all-time favorite Thai dish. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my lunch, which I had along with a boiled duck egg served with a spicy chili dressing.

I ordered this dish from Curry and Rice, one of the restaurants in Terminal 21's food court. It's a "gap khao" shop, which means they have many different dishes to choose from and have served over white rice. You can pick two or three dishes of your choice.
We arrived at lunchtime when it was super busy, but the restaurant was very fast and efficient at serving everyone's meals. It only took a few minutes to wait in line and get our food.

Location
Terminal 21 is an airport themed mall located right in the heart of Bangkok's downtown Asok area. The mall is super fun to visit just to explore, because every floor is themed to look like a different major world city (Istanbul, Tokyo, Paris, etc.). The food court on the San Francisco level of the mall is called "Pier 21". Popular with workers and students on their lunchbreak, the food court is widely considered to be one of the best in Bangkok. It also has a reputation for being the cheapest!
