Nasi Lemak and Curry Puffs
at Old Town Coffee, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia
Nasi lemak means “rich rice” or “creamy rice” in Malay, because the rice is cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaves that give it a rich and aromatic flavor. Nasi lemak is usually served with a spicy sauce called sambal, which is made from chilies, shallots, garlic, tamarind, and shrimp paste. The sambal adds a kick of heat and tanginess to the dish. Nasi lemak also comes with various toppings and side dishes, such as fried anchovies, roasted peanuts, hard-boiled eggs, cucumber slices, fried chicken, beef, or squid.
Nasi Lemak, Curry Puff, and White Coffee at Old Town Coffee, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia |
Nasi lemak is traditionally wrapped in banana leaves for convenience and extra fragrance, but when I ordered it from Old Town Coffee in the arrival hall of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, it was served on a plate in a more modern style.
Nasi lemak is considered the national dish of Malaysia and one of the world’s best comfort foods. It can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or anytime you crave a satisfying and flavorful meal. The flavor mix is really unique, and it all blends together really well. The best way to enjoy nasi lemak is to get a little bit of everything in each bite. It's crunchy, salty, sweet, and a little spicy all at the same time.
