Tom Yum Noodles with Frech Chili Pork
by Somboonthai Noodles, Bangkok, Thailand
I was in the mood for noodle soup the other day and decided to head out to a local shop for lunch.
Somboonthai Noodles is a local shop on my street that is famous for its excellent noodle soup. We took a seat in this local Bangkok shophouse for lunch and ordered some of their famous tom yum noodle soup with pork.
We ordered tom yum noodles with pork, a spicy, sour, and savory Thai noodle soup full of pork balls, sliced pork, fresh chilies, egg noodles, and tons of fresh and savory herbs.
The soup was a little spicy and sour, but that's just how tom yum is supposed to be. What really impressed me the most was how absolutely full the bowl was. It was totally stuffed with fresh egg noodles, pork balls, slices of marinaded pork, and lots of different fresh herbs.
I wasn't able to eat all of the chilies, but I really appreciated the way that they flavored the broth with their spicy capsaicin oils. It really contributed to the rich and complex flavor of the noodle soup.
Price
A large "piset", or "special" serving of the noodles cost 60 baht (about $2). The normal serving, which is a little smaller, cost 50 baht.
Expect most noodle dishes here to cost between 50 and 100 baht per serving (about $1.50-3.00).
