Gai Tod, or Thai Street Food Fried Chicken
at Phawana Market, Bangkok, Thailand
I moved to Bangkok over ten years ago. Back then, the school that I was working up put me up at a small but comfortable condo on Ladphrao Road. Back then, the only way to get down to the Phawana neighborhood was by walking, taxi, or bus. Nowadays there's a brand-new yellow line monorail that runs down to my old neighborhood. Feeling nostalgic, I decided to venture out to a part of town I haven't visited in years to check out some of my old favorite places to eat.
One of my favorite guilty pleasure meals is Thai street chicken. I don't know why, but I really do think that Thai fried chicken is the best in the world. I was delighted to find that the fried chicken guy I used to frequent was still there!

It's difficult to describe what makes Thai chicken just so good. The skin is lightly battered but super crispy, and the meat is soft and juicy, especially when fried on the bone.
I like buying my fried chicken from carts like this. Just point to the piece that you want, and the guy will cut it up into pieces for you and wrap it up in paper to take away. It's perfect for a snack or even for a full meal if you also get a small packet of sticky rice with it (10 baht extra).

Price
It costs 40 baht for one large piece of fried chicken on the bone cut into thirds. The chicken is served with a sweet chili sauce (sometimes called "chicken dipping sauce" in Thailand). Wings and drumsticks cost just 40 baht apiece.

Location
The cart is located just past the 7/11 on Ladphrao Soi 41. It's just a 1- or 2-minute walk from MRT Phawana Station around the backside of Phawana Fresh Market. The shop doesn't have an address, but here's a Google Maps link to the spot: https://maps.app.goo.gl/7ne7gJCBk1u8GGWN8. Look for the bright orange food cart at the back entrance to the market.
