Khao Pad Gai, or Chicken Fried Rice near Phawana Station

Khao Pad Gai, or Chicken Fried Rice

near Pawana Market, Bangkok

Chicken fried rice is one of the simplest, most basic, quickest, and heartiest Thai street food lunches. It's nothing fancy, but from time to time I just get a craving for a huge portion of khao pad gai cooked up in a wok and served on a cheap plastic plate at a very small local street food shop. Something about the atmosphere of such a tiny local Bangkok street food kitchen makes the fried rice taste even better.

I found a very small local street food shop just down the steps from Phawana MRT monorail station. I sat down on a small plastic stool and ordered a plate of khao pad gai and some ice water to cool down. The shop owner immediately hurried over to her wok and began frying up my lunch.

Soon, my plate arrived. It was a very typical serving of Thai-style fried rice (which is distinct from the fried rice dishes you can find in other countries).

The rice was cooked in vegetable oil and fried up with a large amount of sliced chicken, kale, tomatoes, and scrambled eggs, which is what gives Thai fried rice its iconic golden color. It was served with a portion of sliced cucumber, a bit of fresh lime to squeeze on top, and a generous sprinkle of white pepper.

If you don't know what to order at a Thai street food restaurant, you can always go for a khao pad gai. It is always available for a quick and easy meal, and it really never disappoints. As simple as this dish may be, it always leaves me happy and full.
