Legendary "Lhok Nga Thin" Chicken Stew with Rice (Bib Gourmand)
by Sae Phun in Bangkok's Old Town
Sae Phun, a small and very traditional shophouse restaurant in Bangkok's Old Town Rattanakosin neighborhood, has been serving up plates of its legendary chicken stew since 1926! The third-generation family-run restaurant won Michelin's coveted Bib Gourmand award given for amazing food at a great price, and when I stumbled upon it, just steps away from the Temple of the Giant Swing, I stopped in for a late breakfast.
Legendary Chicken Stew with Rice by Sae Phun, Bangkok, Thailand |
I ordered Sae Phun's signature dish: Chicken Stew with Rice, Chinese Sausage, and Fried Egg, which has won Michelin's Bib Gourmand award for five consecutive years.
I sat down at a small wooden table, and my food arrived very quickly. The portion was huge, with a giant scoop of white rice topped with Sae Phun's famous chicken stew. The stew was more like a thick and savory gravy full of chunks of super soft, tender, and juicy chicken.
The dish was also served with a portion of kun chiang (or sweet Chinese pork sausage) and was topped with a runny fried egg - just the way I like it!
It was also served with some cilantro and sliced green chili. The chili is served off to the side, so you don't need to make your dish spicy if you don't want. I love spicy food, though, so I mixed it all in with my meal! This particular type of green chili is sweeter and milder than other types of Thai chilies - it was more like a jalapeño. If you want to get the full flavor, I recommend going for it! It really does add a nice bit of complexity to the flavor of the meal.
The meal was incredibly hearty, rich, and filling, and for just 95 baht, I can see why it is worthy of the famous Bib Gourmand award!

Wat Saket (the Temple of the Golden Mount)
Wat Saket, the Temple of the Golden Mount |
This is one of my favorite places in all of Bangkok! Wat Saket, also known as the Golden Mount Temple, is a serene sanctuary that offers a tranquil escape from the city's vibrant chaos. This historic temple is perched atop a man-made hill, offering panoramic views of the sprawling metropolis. As you ascend the 300+ steps to the summit, you'll be greeted by lush greenery, ornate architecture, and the soothing sounds of temple bells. The gleaming gold chedi at the summit serves as a symbol of enlightenment and is a sight to behold, especially during sunset when it glows warmly against the Bangkok skyline.
Wat Suthat (the Temple of the Giant Swing)
Wat Suthat, the Temple of the Giant Swing |
The Giant Swing, one of Bangkok's most iconic landmarks, sits in front of Wat Suthat, a royal-grade temple in Rattanakosin, Bangkok. The swing has a unique history in Thai spirituality and culture and was once used in traditional Brahmin ceremonies.
Location
Sae Phun is located in Bangkok's old town (Rattanakosin neighborhood) very close to Wat Suthat (The Giant Swing) and Wat Saket (the Golden Mount). The restaurant is located at เลขที่ 112 Thanon Mahannop, เสาชิงช้า Phra Nakhon, Bangkok 10200. The closest metro station is MRT Sam Yot, which is about a 10-minute walk.
The menu is printed in both Thai and English, and the staff can speak English, so you will have no problem ordering even if you are a tourist. The restaurant is very clean and the service is super friendly and polite.
