Nasi Goreng with Fried Chicken, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Nasi Goreng, or Malaysian Fried Rice

by International Taste - Jalan Sekolah Kampung Jijan, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

I ordered a package of nasi goreng, or Malaysian fried rice, on a recent layover in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This is the national dish of the Federation of Malaysia.

Made from a rich fried rice cooked with egg, garlic, shallot, salt, chili pepper - nasi goreng is traditionally topped with a protein (in this case, fried chicken coated in sweet and sour sauce) - and served with cucumber, shallots, and fried onions.

What makes nasi goreng different from other types of fried rice dishes popular throughout Southeast Asia is its unique smoky aroma and sweet and savory flavors. The rice is flavored with sweet soy sauce (known in Malay as kecap manis), which is a type of traditional soy sauce sweetened with palm sugar.

This dish is full of vegetables and was topped with big pieces of juicy fried chicken.

The boxed rice was served with a packet of sweet chili sauce, and I put the whole thing on top to give it a richer and more complex flavor.

For such a simple meal, it's super rich and filling.

I ordered this nasi goreng from "International Taste - Jalan Sekolah, Kampung Jijan" on the Grab app. Unfortunately, I'm not so sure of their exact physical location, but if you have an overnight stay near Kuala Lupur International airport, it's easy to order this delicious meal.
