Spicy Japanese-Style Curry Katsu
by Katsu Katsu, Bangkok, Thailand
Katsukarē, or katsu curry is a Japanese dish that was developed in Tokyo in 1948 and has since become popular all throughout the world. Katsu curry is especially trendy in Bangkok, where a large Japanese expat community increased the popularity of this rich and filling dish.Katsu curry is a dish made from tonkatsu - a breaded and fried pork cutlet - served with Japanese curry on a place of white rice.
Japanese curry differs from other types of Asian curries in that it is typically thicker, milder and sweeter. The sweetness comes from added ingredients such as apples, honey, and carrots.

When I stepped inside Katsu Katsu, a small shophouse restaurant in Bangkok, I was immediately surprised at how authentically Japanese it felt. The small restaurant was quiet and cozy. They had lots of different types of katsu dishes on their menu, but I was in the mood for something super filling, hearty, and comforting.

The waiter asked me if I wanted the normal or the spicy curry. I went for spicy! A few minutes later, my meal arrived.
The curry itself was slightly spicy, but not overbearingly so (Japanese food isn't typically as spicy as other cuisines). The curry was full of chopped onions and carrots, and was rice, spicy, and sweet.
The katsu was breaded in Panko breadcrumbs and perfectly crunchy on the outside while maintaining the juiciness of the thick pork cutlet. I topped my rice with some optional provided pickled radish for a bit of sweetness and sourness to add to the complexity of the dish.

I ordered a set meal which also came with a cup of really nice miso soup full of chewy seaweed and soft cubes of tofu. The simple soup nicely complemented the very rich meal.

I ordered "Set B", which includes a huge portion of spicy curry and rice topped with an entire katsu cutlet. It also comes with a side of hot, delicious miso soup. The set cost 169 baht, which is reasonable for the amout of food you get.
