Classic Thai Breakfast
by On Lok Yun, Bangkok, Thailand
On Lok Yun, a legendary Thai shophouse restaurant has been serving up all-day breakfast in Bangkok's Rattanakosin neighborhood since 1933.
I'm a guy who loves his breakfast, and while I absolutely adore Thai food, as a long-term American expat living in Bangkok, I sometimes start to miss a good old-fashioned (and most importantly, affordable) Western-style breakfast.
I had heard about On Lok Yun recently and was excited to pay a visit to this famous old Bangkok institution to try their famous all-day breakfast.

Review
One of On Lok Yun's signature dishes is their toast with kaya custard. Kaya is a type of coconut jam made from eggs, coconut, and sugar popular throughout Southeast Asia.
On Lok Yun serves their kaya custard on a plate with sweetened condensed milk. It comes with a separate plate piled with cubes of their famous toast to dip into the custard.
What makes this toast so special is how thick and dense the bread is, and how sweet it tastes.

I also ordered one of their famous soft-boiled eggs. The eggs are so soft and runny that they are served in a small teacup and eaten with a spoon! I love runny eggs, and these came out just the way I like them.

I added a dash of Maggi and a bit of white pepper to my eggs.

My main course was On Lok Yun's big breakfast platter. The clearly named "2 eggs + 4 toppings" plate consists of a serving of two scrambled eggs served with a slice of ham, several small sausages, thinly cut slices of sweet Chinese sausage, and a few strips of delicious bacon.

As I was about to start my meal, the owner came over to me to recommend that I try his secret sauce blend on my breakfast. It consisted of ketchup, chili sauce, and a splash of strong, dark vinegar for a sweet, slightly spicy, and slightly sour kick. I gave it a try, and I have to say the combination was phenomenal! I highly recommend it! Each of these three condiments (along with salt, pepper, and Maggi) are placed on each table for the customers to use.

I also ordered a cup of their iced coffee. Sometimes, I've found that coffee in Thailand is served way too sweet for my taste, but On Lok Yun made it just perfect for me. I asked for it to be just slightly sweetened, and it was served exactly to my liking.
Like any good Thai restaurant, each meal comes with small cups of fresh, hot, jasmine tea. The tea is free-flowing, and staff will continue refilling it as you sit and enjoy your meal.
