Baklava and Dondurma Ice Cream
by Kadıköy Saray Muhallebicileri, Istanbul, Turkey
Baklava is perhaps the best-known Turkish food in the word, and a visit to Istanbul is incomplete without at least one serving of this famous sweet.
baklava and ice cream in Istanbul |
Baklava is made with layers of thin filo pastry dough filled with chopped pistachios sweetened with syrup. The pastry is typically brushed with butter or oil between the layers to create a flaky and crispy texture when baked. It's super sweet and rich, and one piece is usually enough for me.
In Turkey, baklava is typically served with a creamy sheep's milk ice cream called dondurma, which is flavored with sahlep (orchid root).
The creamy ice cream goes really well with the sweet, rich, sticky baklava. The ice cream is made in big rolls and sliced to serve alongside the baklava.
