Fish Ball Egg Noodle Soup

by Aung Peng Chung Noodles, Bangkok, Thailand (Chinatown)

Fish noodles for breakfast may seem like a strange choice, but at this storied old Chinatown restaurant, they are a Bangkok classic.

Early in the morning, Aung Peng Chung Noodles opens up their shop in a tiny alleyway in Bangkok's Chinatown neighborhood.

Breakfast began with a bowl of yentafo (fermented soybean paste) broth stuffed full of golden egg noodles and this restaurant's famous fish balls.

Yentafo is a type of pink soup broth made from fermented soybean paste. The sweet, sour, and savory broth is one of Thailand's iconic flavors, and is the base of one of the country's most famous and beloved soups.

In addition to the fish balls, this bowl of noodles was also filled with chopped Chinese kale, crispy taro galls, fried garlic, and more. It was a delicious aromatic soup that I really enjoyed.

Clear Soup with Vegetables in Bangkok, Thailand (theworldofstreetfood.com)

I tend to be more of a fan of dry noodles; that is, noodles served in a bowl without broth. All of the other ingredients in my bowl were the same, including fish balls and fried taro balls.

The fried taro was hard and crispy with a smoky, almost burnt flavor. When soaked in the soup broth, the magic began! It absorbed all of the wonderful yentafo flavors of the soup and brought them to explode in the mouth.

While I didn't really care for the fried taro balls on their own, it was an entirely different story once I tried them soaked in this shop's famous pink broth.

Don't pass up this restaurant for an early morning breakfast in Bangkok's Chinatown. Even if fish for breakfast sounds a little odd to you, I'd encourage you to give it a chance. You won't regret it!
