Roasted Mantou (Chinese Buns) with Milk Dip
By Gu Long Bao Artisan Bun Shop, Bangkok, Thailand
For more than a century this small shophouse on Songwat Road in Bangkok's Chinatown has been selling delicious roasted mantou, or Chinese steamed buns, to eager customers.
Sweet, steamed buns are roasted to gain a golden-brown and crispy crust, and are served with a small cup of sweet fresh cream dipping sauce.

Mantou buns are typically steamed, and you can order the buns steamed as well. However, it's the roasted buns that put this place on the map for food lovers in Bangkok's Chinatown.
The buns are freshly baked for customers meaning that the buns come fresh out of the oven and are hot and crispy on the outside and super soft on the inside.

It costs 65 baht for 3 buns and one dipping sauce. There are two different dips to choose from: pandan and fresh milk. I chose the creamy milk dip, although I'm sure both dipping sauces would be nice with the fresh, hot buns.
You can also order steamed and roasted buns with various fillings including minced pork, red pork, salted egg, vegetarian "pork", and more!

Location
Gu Long Bao Artisan Bun Shop (古笼包 包子店) is located in Bangkok, Thailand's Chinatown at 660, 662 Charoen Krung Road, Khwaeng Samphanthawong, Samphanthawong, Bangkok 10100.
You can get there via taxi or by MRT. If taking the metro, get off at MRT Wat Mangkorn Station.
It's about a 10-minute walk from the station to the shop, but I recommend going this way. The heavy traffic and narrow streets of this neighborhood make it hard for taxis to navigate. It's easiest to get around by foot.

When you walk up to order, you can look inside to see the staff assembling the bao. Each dumpling is made by hand, and it's fun to watch them put each one together!
The shop offers occasional dumpling-making workshops, so keep an eye out for any fun upcoming events!
