Paneer Masala with Garlic Naan
by Batch, Hambantota, Sri Lanka
I arrived at Batch Restaurant in Hambantota on the southern coast of Sri Lanka in the early afternoon just before a storm hit. Hungry and in the mood for a hearty and filling meal, I ordered the paneer masala with a huge serving of buttery garlic naan on the side.

Paneer masala is a popular Indian dish made with paneer (a chewy Indian cheese) stewed in a spiced tomato-based gravy. This vegetarian dish is rich, creamy, and bursting with flavor. The gravy typically includes ingredients like onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, and a blend of Indian spices such as cumin, coriander, turmeric, garam masala, and chili. Paneer masala is often garnished with fresh cilantro and served with rice, naan, or roti.
I ordered a big plate of butter and garlic naan to eat with the masala. The bread, fresh from the oven, was warm, dense, flaky, and buttery, and was stuffed with the incredible flavors of garlic.

The dish was rich and flavorful, but not too spicy. The paneer added a smooth creaminess to the curry.
Location
The restaurant is located near the coast, and the most popular table is literally built in a treehouse with views of the water. It's a beautiful place to stop for lunch when traveling near Tangalle! Unfortunately, it started raining so I had to leave the treetop table and sit inside.
Batch is located at 44RM+CR7, Hambantota, Sri Lanka. It's not far from Tangalle, Sri Lanka. See the map below for the exact location,
