Fried Crab Curry
by Somboon Seafood, Bangkok, Thailand
Since 1969, Somboon Seafood has been serving up plates of their world-famous fried crab curry in Bangkok, Thailand.
This dish, a luxurious plate of rich, fatty crab meat mixed with chili paste, herbs, spices, and egg yolk for a rich and smoot texture, is really something special. It's no wonder that Somboon Seafood has been featured on travel guides, television programs, and even in the Michelin Guide as one of the best places to eat in all of Thailand.
Renowned for their generous portions and reasonable prices which are on par with or even cheaper than the standard in Bangkok, the quality of freshness at Somboon Seafood is unparallelled.

Full mud crabs are fried to perfection in a silky-smooth yellow curry that incorporates rich egg yolk for a sweet and fluffy texture. The curry is mixed up with flavorful aromatics such as Chinese celery and chili. All of the flavors are strong, although the dish is not spicy. Yellow curry is one of the most accessible curry dishes to those who are sensitive to chili!
The crabs are as fresh from the sea as possible and are delivered live from the Gulf of Thailand every morning. They are thick and juicy with lots and lots of meat. These Thai mud crabs are some of the best in the world, and give the curry its iconic fresh, sweet flavor.
The curry is served with a huge pot of white rice which absorbs some of the oiliness of the curry paste and cuts through some of the sweetness of the dish to give it a perfect balance.

Price
There are three different serving sizes with three different prices for this dish.
Small - 550 baht
Medium - 790 baht
Large - 1590 baht
I ordered the small (shown in the photos above), which was way more than enough for two people. This is certainly a dish that is meant to be shared, and I can't even imagine how big the large size would be!
Location
Somboon Seafood has a few locations, all of which are located in Bangkok. The original is in Bangkok's Bang Rak neighborhood at 169 / 7-12 Surawong Rd, Suriya Wong, Bang Rak, Bangkok 10500. It's a short walk from Sam Yan MRT and Sala Daeng BTS.
There's also a location at Central World (BTS Chid Lom), Central Embassy (BTS Ploen Chit), and Siam Square (BTS Siam). I visited the branch in Bangkok's Ratcheda neighborhood (MRT Huay Kwang), which is located at 167/9-12 Ratchadaphisek Rd, Din Daeng, Bangkok 10400.
Every branch sells this wonderful dish (it's what made them famous, after all!), so just visit whichever branch is most convenient.
