Cambodia's best Chinese Dumplings
by Emperors of China, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Airport
I was at Phnom Penh International Airport with some time to kill, so I sat down for lunch at Emperors of China, a branch of Cambodia's most famous Chinese dim sum restaurant.
I had spent a week eating my way across Cambodia's bustling capital (lots of posts and videos to come soon!), but it was time to head home.
I sat down, placed my order, and relaxed in the comfortable booth while I waited for my lunch to arrive.

I decided to order three dim sum dishes:
Crab meat and coriander dumplings, prawn and vegetable dumplings, and fried shrimp wontons. Emperors of China serves a variety of Chinese rice and noodle dishes as well, but I was in the mood for dim sum.

My lunch arrived promptly in steaming hot bamboo dim sum baskets.
Dim sum is a traditional Chinese cuisine composed of a variety of bite-sized dishes typically served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. Originating from the Cantonese culture in southern China, dim sum is typically enjoyed as a brunch or lunch. These "small bites" can come in a huge number of flavors and varieties.
The first dish that I sampled was a plate of crab meat and coriander dumplings. These steamed dumplings were piping hot and were stuffed with a delicious and savory mixture of sweet, fresh crab meat and Chinese herbs inside a delicate paper-thin wrapping.
Next up were the prawn and vegetable dumplings. They were presented similarly to the crab and coriander dumplings but had a slightly chewier texture and salty flavor. These dumplings were served with a small bowl of soy sauce for dipping.
Finally, a box filled with crispy deep-fried prawn wontons arrived at my table along with a small bowl of a sweet and sour dipping sauce.
These wontons were stuffed with full pieces of juicy and tender prawn meat and were wrapped in a super crispy fried skin that cracked and shattered upon first bite. The wontons had a strong savory and salty flavor that was elevated by the delicious sweet and sour sauce in which they were dipped.
