Tempeh Breakfast Scramble
by Farm to Table, Phnom Penh, Cambodia
If you are looking for a clean, green, organic breakfast in Phom Penh, Cambodia, look no further than Farm to Table, a local restaurant that serves up some of the best high-quality healthy meals in the city.
On an early morning in Cambodia's busy capital city, I sat down at one of Farm to Table's rustic outdoor picnic tables to order breakfast. As chickens pecked around my feet, I gazed at the menu and settled on a tempeh scramble with a glass of cacao cold brew for my breakfast.
My breakfast arrived presently, and I was greeted with a sizzling iron pan loaded with savory slices of onion, bell pepper, and other spices alongside a generous portion of freshly baked thick-cut sourdough bread and a side of fresh avocado.
The dish was served with a side of vegan pesto spread for extra flavor and was topped with fresh cilantro.

Tempeh is a traditional Southeast Asian food originating from Indonesia which is made from fermented soybeans. It's similar to tofu, but has a firmer, chewier texture and a richer, nuttier flavor. It's a popular meat substitute in vegetarian and vegan dishes.
The firm cubes of tempeh soaked up all of the delicious flavors of the scramble, and when served with a bit of pesto and a sliver of avocado atop a slice of sourdough toast, created an incredible medley of flavor.
Some of my favorite breakfasts:
- Tom Yum Eggs Benedict and Basil-ade at Sarnies, Bangkok
- On Lok Yun: Classic Thai-Style Breakfast in Bangkok
- American Breakfast at Main Street Cafe, Eureka Springs, Arkansas
- "CrackGriddle" Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Pancake Breakfast Sandwich

I also ordered a glass of cold-brew cacao, which promised "a gentle natural energy without caffeine" and consisted of cold-brewed cacao husks mixed with organic palm sugar and fresh vanilla bean.
I'm not sure if the drink gave me more energy or not, but I can't deny that I enjoyed its mild sweetness and rich flavor. The icy-cold drink was a nice and refreshing replacement for my morning coffee.
My tempeh scramble cost $7 USD and a glass of cacao cold brew cost $3.50 USD for a total of $10.50 USD. The price is a bit higher than the average for a meal in Phnom Penh, but I think it's worth it due to the high quality of the ingredients and the fantastic meal.
