"American Fried Rice" in Bangkok, Thailand by Lucky's Hungry AFR

"American Fried Rice"

by Lucky's Hungry American Fried Rice

The story goes that American Fried Rice was invented in Thailand in the 1960s during the Vietnam War era. At that time, American military presence in Thailand was significant, leading to the introduction of American food products and culinary influences. Thai chefs, particularly those catering to American soldiers, began experimenting with these new ingredients.

The basic version of the dish is a plate of rice stir-fried with ketchup, raisins, and various meats such as fried chicken, hot dogs, and sometimes ham or bacon. It's definitely not American, but it is a super unique dish that is really delicious and can only be found in Thailand.

Lucky's Hungry American Fried Rice is an upscale restaurant in Bangkok's Ari neighborhood that puts a spin on the traditional "AFR".

There were a ton of options on the menu. I was tempted at first by the "Surf n' Turf" American fried rice, but I ended up ordering the classic. The Classic AFR comes with Italian cheese sausage, a gigantic piece of deep-fried breaded chicken thigh, a mountain of savory smoked ham, a pork burger patty, juicy bacon, slices of pork leg ham, and a runny fried egg all sitting atop a huge pile of savory fried rice mixed up with ketchup and raisins. The dish came with a little extra cup of ketchup and mustard on the side. What could be more "American" than that?

We also ordered the "hell chicken" AFR, which tops the American fried rice with a big piece of crunchy, deep-fried spicy chicken reminiscent of hot chicken. The dish also comes with smoked ham, a pile of cold, fresh coleslaw, and a fried egg, and is served with a slice of lime to spritz on top for extra flavor.

As a starter, I also ordered a serving of the corn ribs.

Corn ribs are a meat-free side dish made by slicing, seasoning, and cooking strips of corn. Seasoned with paprika, cayenne, pepper, salt, and other flavors very much like pork ribs, these "ribs" are not just a meat substitute, but a delicious side dish in and of themselves.

Menu

There are so many different types of American fried rice on Lucky's Happy AFR's menu. I ordered the classic and spicy "hell chicken" AFR, but the special surf n' turf dish sounds awesome too.

Besides the items listed on the menu, you can also build your own American fried rice plate by choosing the items and ingredients that you want.

The dishes aren't cheap, but the prices aren't unreasonable for the huge portions.

A plate of classic American fried rice costs 229 baht.
