Joke Samyan is an institution in Bangkok. This local all-day rice porridge shop is popular with students at the nearby Chulalongkorn University for their late-night study sessions. With hearty portions and good prices, the jok, or congee, sold at Joke Samyan always hits the spot.

You can order the jok here to your liking. Each bowl starts with a big portion of boiled rice porridge served with a topping of finely slivered ginger and thin chopped green onion. For a few baht more, I ordered jok with boiled pork balls, a salted egg, and a poached onsen-style egg.
Joke Samyan sells simple, yet delicious and extremely filling bowls of rice porridge. Unlike other jok shops in Bangkok, this restaurant serves up bowls of rice porridge that have a thicker consistency and fuller texture than the traditional mushy congee.
The boiled salted egg gives a powerful salty punch to the congee, while the poached egg adds an extra creamy richness when it's all mixed in.
I recommend adding a dash of white pepper and soy sauce for the best flavor.

Menu
Prices are incredible. Bowls of pork congee range from 45-55 baht with a few extra 5- or 10-baht add-ons. You can have a very big and super filling meal of congee for under $2 USD.

Location
Joke Samyan is located at 691 ถนน บรรทัดทอง Wang Mai, Pathum Wan, Bangkok 10330 at the Stadium One Community Mall. There are plenty of seats indoors at this old-school restaurant, and they serve their porridge to take away as well. The restaurant is open late and is popular as a late-night hangout for students from the nearby Chulalongkorn University.
