Kai-Kra-Ta Full Breakfast in Bangkok's Old Town (Kope Hya Tai Kee)

Kai-Kra-Ta Full Thai Breakfast with Old-Style Coffee

by Kope Hya Tai Kee in Bangkok's Old Town

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day by a long mile, and while I love Thai food, it is a little disappointing to me that I live in a country without much of a breakfast culture. That's why I'm always super excited whenever I find a place that serves up a good, old-fashioned traditional Thai breakfast.

I was taking a walk along Charoenkrung Road in Bangkok's Old Town when I happened to wander past Kope Kya Tai Kee. The restaurant, an old-school Thai cafe, looked inviting. It was crowded - always a good sign - and the sign out front told me that the restaurant had been open since 1952 - another good sign.

I stepped inside the retro coffeeshop restaurant and ordered a full breakfast set menu and a cup of old-style Thai coffee for a late breakfast.

Soon my breakfast arrived. A tray was set before me which hosted an old-fashioned metal pan containing two fried eggs with runny yolks topped with minced pork, shredded cheese, two strips of bacon, and slices of pork pie and sweet Chinese pork sausage. I added some of the restaurant's savory house sauce and ketchup to the pan as recommended by the waiter.

With my breakfast, I also received two grilled Indochinese baguette sandwiches, a cousin of the Vietnamese banh mi, which were buttered and grilled and filled with pork pie and a slice of Chinese sausage (kun chiang). These sandwiches were especially good when dipped into the runny golden yolks of the eggs.

The breakfast was simple, but hearty and delicious. I enjoyed every bite.

Nothing goes better with a big filling breakfast than a cup of coffee!

I also ordered a cup of old-style hot Thai coffee, which came hot and strong and served in a glass with sweetened condensed milk. An additional cup of sweet milk was served on the side so that the coffee could be sweetened to preference (traditional Thai coffee is generally very, very sweet).

Menu

The shop has an expansive menu of coffee drinks and traditional Thai dishes. I decided to order from their breakfast menu, but there are plenty of other options as well.

I ordered the restaurant's biggest breakfast, the "Kai-Kra-Ta" Set 1, which came with extra cheese and bacon and a second baguette sandwich. I also ordered a glass of "chafe", or hot Thai iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk.

The entire breakfast was under 300 baht, which I consider to be quite a good deal in Bangkok nowadays.
