Classic Malaysian Breakfast - Toast, Eggs, and Coffee at Toh Soon Cafe in Penang

Malaysian Toast, Poached Eggs, and Coffee for Breakfast

by Toh Soon Cafe, Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia

It was an early morning in Georgetown, the main settlement on the island of Penang, Malaysia, which meant that it was time for breakfast.

Those of you who have followed this blog for a while will know that breakfast is my absolute favorite meal of the day, and that I'm a huge believer in starting the morning off right with an appropriately delicious meal.

Toh Soon Cafe is an old-school cafe in Penang that serves simple and hearty meals of charcoal-grilled toast, poached eggs, and cups of strong black Malaysian coffee. It's an excellent place to start your morning before a day of adventure and exploration in the historic colonial old town.

The menu is pretty simple. The little open-air cafe, which is tucked away down an unassuming alleyway in the old town of Georgetown, sells thick-cut slices of toast topped with poached eggs or a selection of toppings of your choice. The cafe is very popular with locals and is usually busy in the early morning with families, students, and retirees.

We ordered Toh Soon Cafe's classic eggs on toast, Hainanese toast with butter and kaya custard, and coffee.

Each piece of toast is grilled on a charcoal grill right in the middle of the shop, and arrives fresh, crispy, and hot. A serving of eggs on toast comes with two thick pieces of cubed white Hainanese bread, each one topped with a perfectly runny poached egg.

We also ordered toast with butter and kaya. Kaya, a type of coconut jam, is popular in Malaysia, and is often eaten on toast in the morning. We had our kaya custard in the traditional way - sandwiched between two pieces of golden-brown toast alongside slices of cold, creamy butter.

Of course, breakfast is not complete without coffee! The coffee here is excellent. We tried both the iced coffee and the hot coffee. Both drinks were served strong and sweetened in the classic Malaysian way with sweetened condensed milk.

Menu and Prices

Despite its popularity, prices at Toh Son Cafe have remained remarkably low. The most expensive dish, eggs on toast, costs just 7.60 Malaysian ringgit, or about $1.75 USD. Other items are priced equally reasonably.

Location

Toh Soon Cafe is located at Lebuh Campbell, George Town, 10450 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. This old-school restaurant can be found hidden in an unassuming narrow alleyway but can be identified by the queue that lines up in front of it every morning for breakfast.

The restaurant is certainly nothing fancy, but its popularity speaks for itself. The meals are simple and turnaround is pretty quick, so if you're patient, you won't have to wait too long to get a seat at one of the little metal tables in the cramped alleyway.

Toh Soon Cafe is bursting with character and is one of my most highly recommended breakfast spots in all of Penang.

Toh Soon Cafe is open daily from 8:00 through 17:00. Arrive early or in off hours to beat the crowds. The queue to get a table at Toh Soon Cafe can wrap around the block, but the line tends to move quickly. The simple dishes are served fast, and most customers won't have to wait too long for a spot to sit and eat.
