Gai Yang, or Charcoal Grilled Chicken in Bangkok, Thailand

Gai Yang, or Charcoal Grilled Chicken

at SCB Market in Bangkok, Thailand (Ratchayothin)

While dishes like pad Thai, papaya salad, and tom yum soup are probably the most famous Thai foods around the world, as an expat who has lived in Bangkok for over a decade, I still maintain that one of the things that Thailand does best is its chicken.

Whether fried, stewed, made into a curry, or grilled, Thai chicken recipes are some of the best in the world.

I visited the SCB Market at the Ratchayothin Intersection in Bangkok the other day and tried some incredible charcoal grilled chicken with sticky rice.

Whole spatchcock chickens are marinated in a secret blend of sauces, herbs, and seasonings and then grilled on bamboo skewers over hot charcoals until perfectly cooked.

The whole chickens are then deboned, cut into pieces, and served with sticky rice and a smoky, savory, and mildly sweet chili sauce.

If a whole chicken is too much, you can also have a thigh, breast, or wing.

Location

The SCB Market is located at 175 Ratchadaphisek Rd, Lat Yao, Chatuchak, Bangkok 10900. Its name comes from the fact that it is located just next to the headquarters of the Siam Commercial Bank, the very first bank ever established in Thailand. The SCB headquarters is also home to the very interesting and free Thai Banking Museum.
