Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay: Michelin Peranakan Restaurant in Penang, Malaysia

Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay

Michelin Peranakan Chinese Restaurant in Penang, Malaysia

The cuisine of Malaysia, like the country itself, is a diverse melting pot of flavors and influences. Peranakan, or "Straits Chinese," refers to a distinct culture that developed from early Chinese merchants and settlers who intermarried with local Malay communities and, in many cases, European settlers, creating a unique and vibrant cultural blend.

Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay is a historic traditional dessert factory and shop located in Penang, Malaysia. It has been around for decades and is famous for making Nyonya-style kuih (local cakes and sweets, often called "delights" in English), which are deeply rooted in the Peranakan culture.

The shop's restaurant, which has opened up in recent years due to the factory's popularity, has recently won the Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand award, so naturally I had to pay it a visit on my recent trip to Penang, Malaysia.

The factory, located in George Town, Penang, is known for preserving the authentic methods of making these delicacies. They specialize in a variety of kuih using fresh and local ingredients. Visitors to the factory can not only buy kuih but also observe how they are made using traditional methods passed down through generations.

Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay has become a popular stop for both locals and tourists who want to experience the rich culinary heritage of Penang and enjoy the vibrant, colorful snacks that are a staple of Peranakan culture

I ordered a number of little dishes of snacks, most of which I didn't know what they were! I ordered a type of fried spring roll, a taro root custard cake, a zongzi (or bajang, which is a sort of savory Chinese sticky rice dumpling), and a sticky rice sweet wrapped up and grilled in a banana leaf.

For a drink I ordered a cup of hot tea mixed with sweetened condensed milk in the traditional Malaysian style and a glass of cold and refreshing pandan juice.

Menu and Prices

The shop serves à la carte snacks and small dishes, many of which are intended to share amongst a group along with a cup of coffee or tea.

Prices are reasonable, though a little higher than what is typical in Penang due to the restaurant's popularity, fame, and recent Michelin award.
