Penang Asam Laksa, or Spicy and Tangy Malaysian Noodle Soup
by Penang Road Famous Teochew Cendol
One of the most iconic dishes in Penang, Malaysia, and one that you shouldn't miss when visiting, is Penang asam laksa.
While the appropriately named Penang Road Famous Teochew Cendol is most famous for its cendol, it's also, in my opinion, one of the best places for a very delicious bowl of hot, flavorful asam laksa - a type of noodle soup served in an umami-rich fish-based broth mixed with tangy tamarind paste.

Penang asam laksa is type of laksa (a popular Southeast Asian noodle soup) known for its bold, tangy, and spicy flavors. What sets Penang’s local version apart is its unique use of tamarind or asam, which gives the broth its signature tanginess.
The tamarind paste is mixed into a broth made from mackerel and loaded up with chewy thick laksa noodles and a huge variety of flavorful ingredients - notably onion, spicy chili peppers, chunks of pineapple, and an optional (but highly recommended) spoon filled with a salty and savory fermented prawn paste which you can pour into your noodles for a richer flavor.
The standout feature of Penang Asam Laksa is its sour, spicy, and savory combination. The sourness from the tamarind is balanced by the rich umami from the fish and shrimp paste, while the fresh herbs and vegetables add vibrant flavors and texture. The dish typically has a moderate level of spiciness, though chili can be adjusted to taste.
