Cendol is a popular Southeast Asian dessert, commonly found in northern Malaysia. It's a sweet and refreshing dish typically made with coconut milk, palm sugar syrup, and pandan-flavored green rice flour jelly (the "cendol" strands). These green jelly-like noodles give the dessert its name and distinct look.

I visited the most famous cendol restaurant in the old town of Georgetown, Penang for a dish of this iconic icy and refreshing Malaysian dessert at one of the city's most famous old-fashioned street food restaurants.

Cendol is often served over shaved ice and includes additional toppings like sweet red Azuki beans. Here at Penang Road Nyonya Cendol, an old-school shophouse restaurant that serves up local dishes from several local vendors, the cendol is as authentic as can be.

The first spoonful brought an explosion of textures and flavors - sweetness from the palm sugar, creaminess from the coconut milk, and the soft yet firm bite of the cendol strands. The shaved ice made it the perfect refreshment for the tropical heat. The addition of red beans added an extra layer of richness that balanced the dessert beautifully.

Penang Road Nyonya Cendol is not just a place for food but is also a slice of local heritage. The simple setup, the crowd of both locals and tourists, and the tradition behind each bowl all make this experience a must when visiting Penang.
