Michelin Bib Gourmand Curry Mee with Pork Blood

by Duck Blood Curry Mee, Penang, Malaysia

This Michelin Bib Gourmand award-winning restaurant in Penang, Malaysia has replaced duck blood - the restaurant's namesake - with pork blood curd, but the curry mee served up here is as good as ever.

This old-school Malaysian shophouse restaurant serves up piping hot bowl of freshly made white curry mee stuffed full of generous portions of ingredients.

The sweet and savory coconut-based curry soup serves as the base for a trio of different types of noodles - egg noodles, rice noodles, and a very thin vermicelli-type noodle.

The noodles are then topped with thick cuts of chewy pork belly, sweet and juicy shrimp, cubes of toothsome fried tofu, and - of course - cubes of congealed pork blood.

The noodles come with a spoon filled with the restaurant's house-made chili sauce, which I added to my broth. The chili sauce can be a little spicy, so be careful, but if you are looking to add an extra kick to your meal, you can't go wrong by pouring it all in. I highly recommend it!

If you've never had pork blood before, it might sound a little intimidating, but this curdled "blood tofu" or "blood pudding" has a mild flavor and is soft and chewy with a texture similar to soft tofu.

If you didn't know any better, you might not even have an idea that it is made from blood! The blood curd doesn't have any sort of iron taste that you might associate with blood, but instead tastes like a light pork meat that adds texture and heartiness to the dish. It's also pretty good for you, or so I'm led to believe!

Menu and Prices

Signs in the restaurant inform patrons that Duck Blood Curry Mee's name might now be a little bit out of date, but that the traditional duck blood has been replaced with the easier to find pork blood. Although the ingredients are slightly different from the shop's original recipe, the difference is negligible, and every bowl of noodles is phenomenal.

Noodle prices are reasonable, and even the most expensive dish is priced in line with other local food in Penang. I ordered a bowl of curry mee and roasted pork for 11.50 ringgit, or about $2.50 USD.
