Gluay Tod, or Fried Bananas in Bangkok, Thailand (Thai street food snack)

Gluay Tod, or Fried Bananas

at Muang Thai - Phatra Market, Bangkok, Thailand

Gluay tod, or crispy deep-fried banana fritters, are one of my favorite Thai street food snacks. Found at nearly every street market throughout the country, these sweet bananas are coated in a thick batter and deep-fried until golden brown and crispy on the outside.

This shop sells four different types of fritters. You can buy a bag of whichever type you want or order a mixed bag. It's just 40 baht either way.

The mixed bag comes with small sun-dried bananas which are battered and fried. These bananas have a chewier texture and a more toasted, strongly sweet flavor. You can also get the more classic Thai banana fritters which are made from sliced Thai bananas (the small ones known as "lakatan bananas") which have a softer and more familiar banana texture beneath the sweet, crispy fried batter. Another option is fried pumpkin, which has a really nice, starchy texture and pumpkiny flavor. Finally, there are fried dough balls, kind of like a sweet hushpuppy which is crispy on the outside.

I personally really like ordering a mixed bag because I enjoy the combination of the various flavors and textures, but if I had to choose just one type of fritter, I'd probably order a bag of the traditional fried bananas.
