Thai-Swedish Fusion Meatball Khao Soi

IKEA Thailand's Swedish Cafe (a quintessential part of visiting any IKEA branch if you ask me) recently released a new Swedish-Thai fusion menu. I was visiting IKEA Bangyai, the biggest of Bangkok's three IKEA stores, and decided to take a break from shopping to try the brand-new Swedish meatball khao soi, which combines the classic northern Thai noodle dish with hearty Scandanavian noodles and meatballs.

This is a western-style twist on a classic khao soi - a popular northern Thai dish made from egg noodles and stewed chicken served with onions and pickled mustard greens in a sweet and mildly spiced coconut curry broth.

The customary stewed chicken leg is replaced with IKEA's iconic Swedish meatballs, and the Chinese-style egg noodles are swapped out with European fettucine, which gives the dish a richer and fuller flavor.

The dish is served with a side of chopped purple onion, pickled mustard greens, and fresh lime, all of which I highly recommend adding to the dish. It's also served with a ball of crispy deep-fried fettuccini, which replicates the classic crunchy fried noodles which are typically added atop a bowl of khao soi.

IKEA's khao soi is much milder than the traditional Chiang Mai-style khao soi, but it's still very delicious. While it can't quite compare with real traditional khao soi, it's still really tasty and definitely worth trying after a long day of shopping for reasonably priced home furnishings.
