Thai Yellow Seafood Curry in Bangkok

Thai Yellow Seafood Curry

by Bamee Ban Pong Jae Dang, Bangkok, Thailand

On a normal day, my lunch in Thailand usually consists of a basil stir-fry, a bowl of noodles, fried rice, or other typical local dishes. However, every once in a while, I like to treat myself to something a little more special.

Today, I went out for a plate of seafood yellow curry with rice at a local restaurant in Bangkok.

Thai yellow curry is one of my favorites. This creamy, decadent, and filling dish is made using a rich, mildly spiced curry powder that typically includes turmeric (giving it the yellow color), cumin, coriander, garlic, lemongrass, and other ingredients. Fresh golden egg yolks are stirred into the curry to give it an extra rich thickness and creamy texture. This type of curry is less spicy and far sweeter than other types of Thai curries making it a good intro to curry for people with sensitive palates.

The curry is cooked with coconut milk to create a creamy base, which is then stewed with garlic, onions, sliced coriander, and heaps of seafood including prawns and squid. It's served hot over a heap of jasmine rice and a cup of green iced tea.

This is a more everyday version of the legendary 2,000 baht crab curry from Thailand's most popular celebrity street food chef, Jay Fai.

Price

This dish costs 250 baht which is really quite expensive for local Thai food. Other items on the menu are much more reasonable, but due to the expensive ingredients, this is more of a special treat or luxury dish than an everyday lunch.
