Hot Chicken Sandwich

Pretty Bird, a popular Utah fast-casual hot chicken restaurant is the creation of Iron Chef America winner Viet Pham who began cooking after an unfulfilling career in finance. I visited one of the restaurant's four locations on a sunny afternoon in Salt Lake City to try Pretty Bird's legendary hot chicken sandwich.
Described as "the best chicken sandwich in Utah" and a dish that defeated Bobby Flay on his eponymous show, "Beat Bobby Flay," I had to see for myself if the Pretty Bird sandwich lived up to the hype.

More of my favorite hot chicken
At $17.25 for a sandwich, fries, and a drink, I thought that the combo meal was pretty expensive, but it made sense when I saw the size of the sandwich. It was huge!
A giant piece of tender and juicy fried chicken is coated in batter and deep-fried in the Nashville Tennessee style (with the spice level of your choice). This is topped with Pretty Bird sauce, a secret house made Utah fry sauce, several thick cut pickles, and a mountain of purple sider slaw served between a soft buttered bun.

The sandwich combo comes with hot and crispy thick-cut crinkle fries, a fountain drink, and an additional cup of dipping sauce of your choice for your fries. I tried both the signature Pretty Bird fry sauce (a Utah state specialty) and the hot honey sauce, both of which were excellent.
You can choose how hot you want the hot chicken to be. There are five levels of spice ranging from "none" to "hot behind". I ordered "hot", the 2nd spiciest option. While I enjoyed my sandwich, I found that the heat overpowered my tastebuds a bit. On a future visit, though I truly enjoy very spicy food, I think I might order the "medium" option.
I will absolutely be visiting again. While I haven't had many meals in Utah yet, the hot chicken sandwich at Pretty Bird definitely sits at the top of my list.
Ordering
The menu is pretty straightforward. You can order the famous sandwich (highly recommended), or you can order a crispy tender roll, chicken nuggets, or chicken tenders. If it's your first time, I highly suggest that you order the sandwich. After all, it's what made Pretty Bird famous in the first place!
Ordering is pretty simple as well, although you do have to use the order screen and cash is not accepted.

Location
Pretty Bird has a few locations in Utah, all located in the Salt Lake City area. I visited the location in Salt Lake City's Sugar House neighborhood at 675 E 2100 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84106.
