Chicken Curry - authentic Laotian Food in Waco, Texas
by A Taste of Laos
I admit that I was a bit skeptical about finding an authentic Laotian restaurant in Waco, Texas, but I was very impressed by A Taste of Laos.
I was visiting my parents at their home in Texas, and one afternoon my dad and I decided to try A Taste of Laos for lunch. I've been to Laos a few times, and I was curious to see how authentic the food here would be.
It turns out that the food is incredible! The chicken curry, a rich and warming bowl of curry soup cooked with slices of tender chicken, mushrooms, herbs, and spicy chilis that my dad ordered was very authentic, and tasted just like what you might find in Vientiane or Luang Prabang!

I ordered the shrimp Buddha bowl, a rice bowl topped with shredded carrots and cabbage, chopped spring onions, battered and deep-fried shrimp, and a sweet creamy house sauce. The dish was incredible but was closer to American-Chinese food than to authentic Laotian food. Nevertheless, I savored every bite; I am a huge fan of American-Chinese food.
So, no matter what you are in the mood for - whether it's very authentic curry or more Americanized rice bowls, A Taste of Laos has something for everyone. I was really impressed with the restaurant, and will look forward to coming back some time in the future.
A Taste of Laos is located at 108 Jim Dr, Hewitt, TX 76643, United States. While technically having a Hewitt address, the restaurant is within the Waco metro area at an unassuming strip mall. Don't let the humble location fool you; the food here is excellent!
