Kolaches and Coffee
in Salt Lake City, Utah
When I landed in Salt Lake City, I was expecting to be able to enjoy burgers, waffles, and all sorts of traditional American food. However, never would I have guessed that I would be able to find a little piece of Texas in Utah to remind me of home in the form of a Czech pastry.I had been staying with my old college roommate in Salt Lake City for a few days, and one morning, I decided to wake up early to go out for breakfast. Imagine my excitement when I discovered a kolache bakery just a few blocks away from his apartment!
Although little-known outside of Texas and other areas with large Czech-American communities, kolaches are growing in popularity across the United States.

Next, I had a savory turkey, bacon, avocado, and cheese kolache. Hrushka's is generous with the fillings, and every bite had a great cross section of ingredients. The rich, smoky bacon and turkey went really well with the fresh avocado and melted cheese, and there was more melted cheese baked on top of the kolache dough as well.
Finally, I went for something a little more "breakfasty" with a scrambled egg and sausage kolache. While still not "traditional", this is more similar to the type of kolache you might be able to find at the Czech Stop in West, Texas. Again, the kolache was generously stuffed with ingredients, which is the most important thing in a good kolache. There's nothing more disappointing than when you just get a mouthful of bread and no filling.
Hrushka's Kolaches had a large selection of traditional fruit kolaches and sausage klobasneks, but when I noticed that they had a seasonal menu, I decided to order something special. I started off with an autumnal pumpkin and chocolate kolache.
The kolache dough was soft and fluffy, perhaps a bit fluffier than that of a more traditional kolache and was filled with a fruit center that reminded me of fresh pumpkin pie. The pumpkin was stuffed with chocolate chips and topped with more chocolate chips.

I took my kolaches and coffee to the bakery's back patio to sit down and eat. These kolaches were all excellent and the ingredients were clearly of high quality. Prices were reasonable, and the strong black drip coffee was nice as well.
Location
Hrushka's is located in Salt Lake City's Sugar House neighborhood just a short walk from the streetcar station at 2030 S 900 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84105. It can get busy in the mornings, but the line moves quickly, so you shouldn't have to wait too long even if there is a crowd. The line was out the door when I arrived, but I was sitting down with my breakfast and coffee within ten minutes.
