Gai Tod Takrai, or Thai Lemongrass Fried Chicken with Sweet Chili Sauce

ไก่ทอดตะไคร้ Lemongrass Fried Chicken Sweet Chili Sauce

by Tum Tum Inter, Bangkok, Thailand (MRT Ladphrao Station)

Gai tod takrai, or lemongrass fried chicken, is a savory and delicious Thai dish. I've always asserted that Thai fried chicken is the best in the world, and this dish takes Thailand's perfection of the simple marinaded and fried chicken and combines it with the classic herbal flavors of the country's cuisine.

The dish is nothing fancy; crispy-skinned deep-fried chicken on the bone, marinaded in the traditional Thai style in a fish sauce mixture, is topped with crispy slivers of lemongrass and crispy fried basil leaves, both of which impart a subtle flavor and herbal crunch to the dish. However, it's bursting with flavor. It's hard to mess up fried chicken, but when it's good, it's really good.

The chicken is served with a classic sweet chili dipping sauce.

This type of dish is meant to be shared family style with a number of other sides, but I enjoyed it by myself. It was very filling, and surprisingly affordable for the amount of food that I received.
