Malaysian Chicken Rice
by Tong Seng Roasted House, Penang, Malaysia
Sometimes, there's nothing better than a simple meal done well, and what could be simpler or more satisfying than chicken and rice, a staple across the world? Nearly every cuisine has its own version of chicken and rice, each subtly different, reflecting the ingredients and tastes of the local area.
I was visiting Penang, Malaysia. It was early evening, and I was tired after a long day of traveling. I searched for restaurants near my hotel, and came across Tong Seng Roasted House, a humble little diner-style Malay-Chinese shop in Georgetown.

Chicken and rice at the Tong Seng Roasted House costs just 6 Malaysian ringgit (about $1.35 USD). It's a really reasonable price for local Malaysian food in Penang.
The meal was very satisfying, with deliciously roasted chicken, tender and glazed in a Chinese-Malay sauce and topped with chopped chives served over a scoop of rice. There was nothing fancy about it at all, but it was cheap, filling, and delicious. By not overcomplicating a dish by adding too many ingredients, sometimes, simple really is best.
