Roast Duck with Rice and Shrimp Dumplings

I love duck. It may well be my favorite meat!

The other day, I had an extraordinarily tasty lunch of roasted duck with rice in Bangkok, Thailand.

Slices of decadent and juicy Thai-style barbecued roast duck meat were served with a savory and spicy chili sauce alongside a heaping mound of jasmine rice and a side of bok choy. Although the presentation was traditional and simple, the flavors were out of this world. The duck was some of the richest and juiciest I've ever had.

The shop has a pretty large menu of Chinese-Thai classics, so I decided to order two different types of shrimp dumplings to sample alongside my roast duck.

First, I had a plate of crispy rose dumplings. The rose dumplings, named so for their unique shape which resembles a rose, were stuffed full with a piece of juicy shrimp and deep fried until crispy. They were served alongside a cup of a sweet honey-based dipping sauce which added a unique complexity to the crispy, salty, umami of the dumplings.

After that I ordered a plate of Szechuan steamed dumplings. The soft, delicate dumplings were filled with shrimp, tossed in a spicy Szechuan pepper sauce which numbed the tongue in a really nice way, and topped with sliced green chilis and spring onions.

The dumplings were excellently made, with the shrimp inside steamed to perfection. I love Szechuan flavors and the sauce, which covered the relatively simple and plain traditional wrappings, imbued each bite with an amazing burst of flavor.
