The John's Original
by John's Pizzaria of Bleeker Street, New York City, USA
John's of Bleecker Street, established in 1929 by Italian immigrant Giovanni "John" Sasso, is a cornerstone of New York City's legendary pizza heritage.
John's Pizzeria on Bleecker Street has been using its continuously burning coal-fired brick oven since its establishment in 1929. This means the oven has been burning for nearly a century, giving each of their pizzas its signature smoky flavor and perfectly charred crust. The oven has become an iconic part of the pizzeria’s history and contributes to its long-standing reputation as one of the best spots for New York-style pizza.

What sets John's apart from the city's countless other pizza shops is its unwavering commitment to traditional pizza-making techniques. The rapidly disappearing use of a coal-fired brick oven imparts a distinctive smoky flavor and perfectly charred crust to John's hand pulled thin crust pizzas.
I entered the restaurant just as they were opening, and was seated at a booth in the small, dimly lit dining room. The walls of John's Pizzaria are lined with photos of celebrities who have visited - I sat near smiling photos of J.K. Simmons and Danny McBride. It's a true New York institution.
"Danny McBride was more excited to see us than we were to see him!" the waiter told me in a proud voice.
The famous oven is so hot that it takes just 3 minutes to completely bake a pizza. Unlike other New York pizza shops, John's does not sell pizza by the slice, meaning that I had to order an entire pie for myself. Luckily the pizza was thin crust, and I had a big appetite; I ordered the John's Original, a classic New York pizza with mozzarella and tomato sauce. Eating the entire pizza was quite the undertaking, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the integrity of my blog.
The 14" pizza comes with six slices of perfectly baked thin crust pizza topped with savory tomato sauce and a huge topping of cheese.
Your guy is nothing if not dedicated to this blog. I bravely devoured the entire pizza in service to The World of Street Food! I wasn't able to eat anything for the rest of the day, but that's neither here nor there...
The pizza was excellent! The crust was perfectly charred, and the portion of cheese was generous. It wasn't overly greasy like some New York pizzas can be, and even though I added a bit of quintessential parmesan and red pepper flakes, each slice was delicious enough without it.
I ordered The John's Original (a classic New York thin crust with mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce), but they also have several different appetizers, sandwiches, pastas, and other pizza flavors to choose from on the menu as well. Honestly, though, there's no reason to visit John's if you aren't going to have one of the restaurant's famous pizzas. They are so delicious that it would be a shame to order anything else on your first visit.
