Premium Pork Roujiamo Burger

Ròujiāmó, sometimes called the "Chinese hamburger", is a street food originating from Shaanxi Province, China. It's considered to be the world's oldest type of hamburger and is thought to date back to around 200 BCE!

This week, I stopped in for lunch at Chop Chop Chinese Burger, an upscale and modern food stall in the basement food court of Central Rama IX in Bangkok, Thailand. It was my first time trying this famous Chinese street food dish, and I loved it!

Chinese hamburgers are often made from stewed pork stuffed inside a flatbread called baijimo, but can also be made with lao tong guan, or thousand-layer pancakes. Chop Chop Chinese Burger serves the latter; the pancake-like buns are flaky and multi-layered, very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

The filling is made from slowly stewed pork which has been made with tons of traditional sweet and savory spices and seasonings, along with the fresh flavors of steamed and slightly crunchy green peppers. The pork is so tender and soft that it melts away with each bite.

I only had one complaint, and that is that the roujiamo was a little bit messy to eat! The bun was stuffed so full of stewed pork and peppers that the ingredients kept trying to spill out whenever I took a bite. I guess that just means that this shop is generous with the fillings.

I will definitely be coming back (but I don't think I'd be interested in trying the intestine burger which they also offer on the menu)!

Menu

The original premium pork Chinese burger costs 100 baht (around $3 USD), and the most expensive duo burger with premium beef and intestines (not necessarily my thing!) runs up to 165 baht (around $5 USD). If you like the crispy pancake-like buns, you can order one by itself for just 35 baht (about $1) or 4 for 100 baht. The menu is printed in Thai, Chinese, and English and is very simple to read and order from.
